Personal growth for career growth- having an opinion
My current workplace’s culture has changed me as a person, in making it a required job skill and a responsibility to have an opinion/point of view with data to back it, express it and generally have enough conviction on it to be ready to execute against it.
I did not get here with this. When I joined, the past feedback was that this was an area of development. I got this insider tip on what gets rewarded here and was super keen on making it here.
Not hesitating to speak up and taking an initiative to always have a voice were the biggest things I trained myself on early on. It paid out well. I earned trust and got recognition. Gradually expanding into asking questions outside my realm and uncomfortable questions.
After 3 years, I am now learning the art of not taking the lead in all situations, but letting others go first. Also, taking an initiative to unlock this skill, strength and potential in others. Often I find myself saying things 1:1 so that people have the data, conviction and courage to learn and tune this skill. This gives me immense satisfaction.
